If you have decided to bring home a pet turtle, you should know what is necessary to house them comfortably and take care of them. Depending on the kind of pet turtle you choose, each has its own needs and requirements for living a healthy and happy life in your home. In turtle pet care, generally there are a few needs that most turtles have in common as far as their habitat is concerned.

Turtle Pet Care 101 - The Environment

The first thing in turtle pet care, is being able to provide them with a comfortable environment that consists of a wet and dry habitat. You can do this by constructing a tank with both a wet area and a dry area in it. There are certain things that you should provide no matter what type or gender of turtle you now own.

The wet part of the habitat should consist of water that is at the right temperature for them.  The temperature between the two environments needs to be consistent to help your pet turtle adapt to the change between wet and dry more easily. You should also make sure you provide a place with a continual supply of fresh water in a small container in the dry environment for your new turtle.

The wet habitat also should not be too deep and a basking ground should be made of small pebbles and flat stones so that it is more comfortable for your turtle. The basking ground can be provided either by the natural sunlight in a very sunny spot or by an ultraviolet (or UV) lamp. Reptile UV lamps are available at most pet stores and it would be wise to invest in one for the health and well-being of your new pet turtle.

Turtle Pet Care 202 - The Turtle Feedings

In Turtle Pet Care 202, we learn how to feed your pet turtle. Your pet turtle's feedings should be done in water as they cannot swallow otherwise. It is important to keep both environments clean on a regular basis. Some pet owners make the mistake of thinking that their pet turtles do not require that much care or cleaning, turtles keep themselves very clean in their natural environment. With that said, this kind of turtle pet care is important so you keep them safe from any possible bacteria or soft-shell disease.

Choosing the Right Food

Depending on the kind and breed of turtle, turtles have different dietary needs.  However, they all require an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals that you can either give to them through their food or through their supplements.

There are all kinds of vitamins and mineral supplements that you can feed your pet turtle. These supplements can be given to them once or twice a week as part of their regular feeding and will provide additional dietary support and nutrition that may be lacking from their regular diet.  As a rule of thumb, if you provide your pet turtles with a healthy diet of a variety of fresh, leafy greens and other fresh vegetables they shouldn't need supplements.

Certain kinds of turtles enjoy worms and others fresh vegetables. Also some prefer to provide their turtle with a calcium block to snack on.  This helps take care of the calcium needs which can be a little bit more difficult to supplement through a normal diet. Again, always make sure that you provide your pet turtles with a constant supply of fresh water that is always clean.

Depending on the specific kind of your turtle, you may want to check with the local pet store, or purchase the Turtle Guide Book for any additional guidelines and nutritious needs that your pet turtle may have.

It wise to do your own research entirely before you decide what kind of pet turtle you really want to have so you can be sure that you will be able to provide the perfect turtle pet care they need.
